Model Railroader

Model Railroader Review

I've just finished the 75th anniversary issue of Model Railroader. Another excellent issue. Model Railroader is the once - and still - leader in the model railroading journalism field. There are other magazines which cater to a particular niche in this already small interest area that may do a better job in their specialized areas of interest - but for the best overall coverage, for leadership, for vision, for service to model railroading - Model Railroader stands alone.

Model Railroader offers the best photos, well-written articles, leading edge ideas and techniques. And they do this all for about the same price as the other magazines in the field.

Popular Woodworking (1-year)

Popular Woodworking (1-year) Review

It's very easy to write off Popular Woodworking without even reading it. One tends to assume that it is going to be the Readers Digest of woodworking. One imagines countless overly simplified articles on how to build bookcases or select the right shop vacuum. Actually, this couldn't be further from the truth.

Admittedly, Popular Woodworking is not a high-end magazine. It is for the moderately funded woodworker who wants to get the best out of his or her tools without a huge outlay. It's also for folks who like a wide coverage of the woodworking field. Plans, tools, jigs, wood, techniques, and workshops.

In going through a recent issue repeatedly, I kept finding little articles that I have missed on earlier readings. This is a compliment to the editors in that they try to answer many needs. On the other hand, it indicates that magazine layout and structure is a bit haphazard and cramped. You just have to keep perusing it until everything sinks in. Take the time to do so and I think you will agree the Popular Woodworking is worthwhile reading.

Popular Woodworking (1-year) Overview

POPULAR WOODWORKING has everything woodworkers need to develop their skills. Woodworking essentials from A to Z are covered. Topics include routers, lathes, joinery, table saw use, and more. Every issue includes inspiring projects that build your skills and make your shop time more rewarding. Articles about technique and finishing methods are written by professional woodworking experts. Tool reviews are based on shop tests that arm you with the knowledge you need to make smart buying decisions.

Crochet!

Crochet! Review

I've subscribed to Crochet! for several years. Through those years, they've improved the layout and offerings. Usually there's at least one item that catches my eye.

There's a good variety of patterns, usually an afghan or two, a baby or child's item or two, household items, flower motifs, a few cute & some not so cute wearable patterns in each issue. You can expect some cute purse patterns, once in a while a scarf or shawl. The magazine seems to have a running theme that will last a few months...once it was flowers, I loved those, very cute, now it's special stitch patterns...handy if you're creative and like to design your own items.

Crochet! still uses some yarns I've never heard of, but they always give the yarn weight which makes it easier to substitute & there's a buyer's guide in the back of the magazine. I haven't noticed many amigurumi patterns, but there's been some. I made a frog a couple years ago.

The magazine includes a project page, Crochet! at a Glance, which has a photo of each pattern in the issue along with the page # it's found on. You'll also find a stitch guide, buyer's guide info, the patterns are rated by skill level, & a chart explaining yarn weight. There's a web page with additional information & usually an option to receive a free issue so you can decide if you like the magazine. You'll find that info on their website.
They are beginning to promote their website more. The September 2009 issue includes some pattern photos, but you're instructed to go to the website for the pattern.

Crochet! Overview

Crochet! magazine brings you today's most elegant and creative patterns, all original and never-before-published! You get the latest fashion looks in the newest yarns and threads, plus afghans, doilies, baby gifts and more! Easy-to-understand instructions and full-color photos make your crochet expe

Model Railroad News

Model Railroad News Review

If you are looking to purchase model railroad equipment, this is a good resource. The content concentrates on performance reviews of rolling stock and accessories. Many of the articles are in the bylined "column" format, that is they are recurring features in the magazine. They cover all gauges. This is not a scenery building, layout design magazine, but if you'd like to know about, for example, the latest DCC equipment and how well it works (or doesn't), this is the magazine for you. I find every issue has something for everyone, whether a beginner or old hand. I am a subscriber.
