terrific magazine for the militay modeler order direct or from amazon...stay away from Wise Owl publication in california...they will take your money and provide you with nothing but problems trying to get delivery of it
This magazine is all about card making; with fun ideas, samples and suggestions.
The July 2008 issue boasts "103 hot projects for summer card making!" The cover also announces an article about "Cards gone Wild!", Ink Essentials, Celebrate Summer!", and Postcards that rule. Feature articles in the July issue also included: "Card Calendars", "Stars and Stripes Forever", "Summertime Fun" and "Christmas in July." The articles and samples with were charming and fun. The work is lighthearted and despite the abundance of exclamation marks, the magazine doesn't go over the top on the topics covered.
My favorite ongoing column is "Readers Reach Out". In each issue a recipient is picked to receive cards, and readers are encouraged to follow a theme. In the July 2008 issue cards were sent to Cook Children's Medical Center in Fort Worth, Texas, and the theme was gratitude. Cardmakers were encouraged to leave the inside of the cards blank so that the cards could be used as thank you notes from card recipients. What a wonderful RAK to participate in!
This issue also had an article on the different uses for different inks. I always try to read articles on inks, since I experiment a lot and sometimes wonder what's best. This article clearly described the differences between pigment ink, dye ink, chalk ink, and specialty ink. Lisa Johnson, author of the article, suggests dye ink when using clear stamps. This was the first time I read about an ink suggestion for clear stamps. Now I will have to try and compare!
I enjoyed CardMaker Magazine, but it is not a magazine to learn new techniques. The samples are beginner to intermediate level, fun and interesting with quick descriptions. If you have never done the technique before you may find it hard to follow, so use the magazine for ideas and inspiration. The card samples are fun; enjoy the show!
Even with Beckett clearly the leader in the monthly hobby price guide, I found that Tuff Stuff simply has "MORE." More articles, more insider info, more items reviewed, etc. They just simply aren't as up to date with the pricing as Beckett is, but hey, who cares?
A card is only worth as much as somebody else is willing to pay for it. And NOBODY pays "book value" for anything. Sometimes it's more if a player is hot (Chipper Jones close to .400 BA) or has just died (Sorry??). Sometimes it's less if they are in a slump (Barry Zito?) or are being blasted for steroids (Barry Bonds?).
I haven't had a subscription to TS in a few years but have picked up the occasional mag on the newsstand. At for the year though, I had to jump on it.
Woodworking is a popular hobby and those who partake in this activity often turn to printed resources for new ideas, tips, etc. Wood Magazine is one publication designed to help woodworkers in several ways. It offers new techniques, new tools, and new projects for the budding or experienced woodworker who is seeking out ways to improve/develop their woodworking talents. Wood Magazine wants its readers to be educated and curious, and it offers articles that satisfy both desires.
Wood Magazine's articles span a wide range, with some that cover basic tasks like cutting wood at an angle to more complicated tasks like carving unique shapes and patterns. One fact that readers will notice immediately is that Wood Magazine's articles are divided up so that woodworkers at all levels- from novice to expert- will find something to which they can relate. The articles tend to lean slightly toward the beginner to intermediate level, but there are certainly enough advanced articles in each issue to keep all woodworkers busy and satisfied.
The articles in Wood Magazine are generally short, and they are often written in a step by step format, with illustrations and measurements (where applicable) to remove any guesswork from the process. These visual aspects and step/bulleted format make the magazine seem like a reference guide at times, but they are very useful for someone who wants to build one of the items and doesn't want to take any chances.
If there is anything unattractive about Wood Magazine, it would have to be the high price. The cover price is high and there is little discount incentive when you sign up for a subscription. Also, this magazine is published only seven times per year. This latter fact could frustrate some woodworkers who want new and fresh ideas on a more frequent basis.
Aside from the cost, however, Wood Magazine is a good magazine for woodworkers at all levels. The tips and tricks are useful, the education valuable, and the projects interesting and/or practical. It makes a good magazine for the occasional or serious woodworker who wants to develop one's skill and/or increase one's interest in the art of making things from wood. A little more length to the magazine and a lower price would be nice, but it is still a good magazine overall.
This is an outstanding resource for anyone interested in floral design. The arrangements range from elegant to exotic. Each design lists the various botanicals needed for the arrangement and tips for achieving the desired effect. The photography is detailed and first rate. As an added plus, advertising is kept to a bare minimum.
This magazine (it's acutally more like a newspaper) is a publication that I look forward to getting every week. I read on average, 80 - 90% of the articles. Traditional antique collectors and Collectible collectors alike will always find some articles, appraisals and commetary that will be of interest.
'Arts & Crafts Homes and the Revival' is a quarterly magazine targeted to readers and DIYers who like/love/adore the Arts & Crafts/Bungalow/Craftsman philosophy and esthetic in architecture and interior design. If you know the terms, you may have your own opinion about this magazine.
If you don't know these terms, do a quick search on 'Arts & Crafts,' 'Bungalow,' 'Craftsman,' William Morris, John Ruskin, Edward Burne-Jones, Dante Gabriel Rossetti, Charles Rennie Mackintosh, Frank Lloyd Wright, and the California architects and brothers Charles Sumner Greene and Henry Mather Greene; that will give you an idea of the scope of design and the vitality of the esthetic.
I could rave for pages about the A&C/B/C esthetic, but I'm supposed to be writing about the magazine. It's wonderful if you want information or resources to restore or recreate any building, interior, furniture, and/or other objects that fit in the general subset of A&C/B/C. Articles about the restoration or remodeling of a Bungalow/Craftsman-style home usually include extensive resource lists (architect, contractor, cabinetry, windows, wallcoverings, and suppliers of hardware), complete with phone numbers and websites.
I've bought it on newsstands on and off, and splurged for my birthday with a subscription. Regarding order fullfillment, I received the first issue in the time frame on the order confirmation, but the magazine was unpackaged and creased in half, marring the cover and some of the interior pages. More than other magazines, photographs are an important part of "A&CHatR", and it's disappointing to receive a magazine with obvious flaws from shipping. It also was the Summer 2010 issue that I already have. The good thing is that I received the new issue, Fall 2010, the next day, meaning that I won't have shipping problems (just condition ones).
No, I'm not a DIYer yet, but my husband and I are still looking for a house or condo. I'm trying to convince him that A&C/B/C is the way to go--but I promised him Sherlock Holmes' parlour (fireplace, Persian slipper, mail on the fireplace mantel) for his steampunk/Victorian man cave! I always show him photos of furniture and floorplans of remodeled houses, hoping he'll catch my excitement!
I have subscribed to this magazine for several years now, after buying them one issue at a time from the bookstore for several years. The magazine consistently has a wide variety of articles, covering techniques, events, biographies, project suggestions for instructors, and advice for those setting up their own studios. The quality continues to improve, and my personal experience with their customer support was quite satisfactory.
I subscribe to almost every cross stitch mag available this one is one of the better ones, It has a variety of subject matter and black and white charts. Also has some nice comments. However, there is no what people have stitched section (Like the UK mags have) and very few articles for actual reading
I really enjoy this magazine because it shows things that I could really make. It explores the making of easy to experienced woodwork. So there's something for everyone.
I recommend this magazine for someone who enjoys working with wood.
There are two good ways to tell what audience at which a woodworking magazine is aimed. The first is the type of advertising, and the second is how much skill do the projects expect you to have. It is pretty clear right away that Woodworker's journal server home woodworkers who are already of moderate skill. The advertised 'big toys' run in the 500 to 1500 dollar range, although there are a couple of high end combination machines in the adds as well.
Articles expect you to know how to use the tools of the trade but not sure about the 'best' way to do something. A recent issue makes a study of an intarsia backed high chair with some interesting joinery, and instructions for making a genuinely exotic angle jig for a table saw. Writing is solid and reasonably illustrated, but they devote little space to what you should already know, which can make these projects a stretch for a tyro.
The Magazine is very tool oriented. There isn't a lot of space devoted to hand tools or history. Expect articles comparing nail guns and helping you decide whether stationary or bench top equipment is right for you. However, traditionally manual tasks like finishing also receive their due. I found the Woodworker's Journal suited me quite well, and I expect to continue reading it.
This past summer I picked up two issues of this magazine and they sat on my shelf for a few months before I finally got around to reading them. I was impressed. The quality of this magazine is higher than any other photographic magazine I've seen. The image quality, the paper, all top notch. This is a fine arts magazine and doesn't (at least from what I saw) spend time with articles about the technical side of the art. Rather, it focuses on individual artists and shows samples of their work. There are more great photographs in here than in any other photo magazine I've read. I intend on subscribing.
I gave this subscription along with another magazine as a gift to my graphics-design-type daughter. Her response was "I got my magazines today and they're really nice! It's almost like getting a book because they're so artfully laid out. It's definitely something I will save after I read."
I think this is the best carving magazine on the market. I wish you got 6 issues a year instead of 4. There is always something to carve from beginner to professional. I have carved many things from here. It is fun to go on the fox hunt too. There is a section for shows and seminars also. I recommend this to any carver or woodburner.
This is the perfect craft book to keep me and the kids busy all month long. Perfectly laid out with pattern, and detailed how to's. AAAAA+++++++++
It is hard to believe but I bought my first "Rock and Gem" magazines when I was a kid in New Jersey. Garden State News on Central Ave, Jersey City, NJ. Recently I received a magazine in the mail from my subscription and it said 40 years old! Wow! Is that how long it has been? I was like 9 years old when I bought my first Rock and Gem magazines! I am 50 now...man where did the time go?! Anyway this magazine is still superb and even better now because the quality of the photography has improved over the years. Yes it is true the advertisements tend to be the same a lot but that is how they can afford to keep going. I hope they keep going as it is nice to be able to get a magazine that has good and interesting news and articles and makes you feel good! It keeps you interested in your hobby that you have loved for so many years. Or maybe get someone else interested in it for the first time! Great magazine!
I love this magazine! I cross-stitched in the 70-80s before my eyes were less co-operative which led me to beading. This magazine combines both beading and cross-stitch! The terrific patterns are varied: blackwork, 3D (ex. Santa, mobile, lizards) mixed media (cross stitch paper, box) and of course the usual jewelry (great amulet bags), wall hangings, pillows. They have good instructions-although occasionally the Australian terms for products makes you have to search for that item. They aren't cutesy like many cross-stitch mags. The stitching patterns have a good amt of depth/detail. The paper quality is wonderful and charts are easy to enlarge if you need to. The most recent issue addressed why she added beading. Plain and simple--it kept her magazine alive. Cross-stitching is not quite as popular as it was and beading is going strong so it made sense to combine the two. Her results address both well and as another reviewer suggested, you can use many patterns for both! SO I really recommend this -you won't go wrong!
This magazine explores the art of photography in true style and without false boundries. Even though the text is in French, they often reference an article's subject with a web link that you can explore or, of course, you can google the artist name and learn more about a particular work in English. Buy it at the newstand if you don't want the hastle of dealing with a subscription. The price is very reasonable considering it's an import.
